New Year’s At 40,000 Feet

Here we are now in 2018! I experienced the change of year in flight, off of Canada, at about 40,000 feet. I don’t recall flying before on a New Year’s Eve through to New Year’s Day:

I observed the new year’s arrival as many did down on, uh, solid ground:

One of downsides of flying TO Europe from North America is the “short night.” The flight from New York (technically, this time, New Jersey) takes about 5 and a half hours.

That means you depart at 9:30 pm and land at about 3 am in the time zone you had left… but you arrive in London at 8 am…

So you are a bit discombobulated – I like that word – as you wander into the terminal. It is an odd feeling. Suddenly, it is mid-morning.

The flight was ostensibly full, but in World Traveller Plus (where we were; basically it is premium economy) there were several empty seats.

Pre-take off, naturally everyone settled in looking to make themselves comfortable. I usually have my iPad in hand for reading on the Kindle app and my iPhone full of music. Both are placed, of course, safely in “airplane mode.”

At one point, I happened to notice a nearby man’s reading material

I was horrified.😱 I wanted to cry out, “No, no, no! There is so much more out there to read!📚 It’s a new year! Be more adventurous!”😂

Have a good day, wherever you are in the world. 🙂
